Does the very thought of visiting the dentist cause you anxiety? If so, you are not alone. In fact, it is estimated that as much as 15% of Americans suffer from dental-related fears and phobias. This can make scheduling appointments almost impossible as you become paralyzed with fear. Now, you can feel comfortable and relaxed during your appointments with sedation dentistry. With the use of oral conscious sedation and anti-anxiety premedication, your fears will fade away so you can enjoy your time in the dental office.
Stop Fearing the Dentist
Dental fears are quite common and can be caused by several factors, such as the sights, smells, and sounds of the office. If you have had a bad or painful experience in the past, it is natural to become a bit fearful during future appointments due to the worry of a similar experience.
For others, their fear may originate from the concern over needing a invasive or painful treatment, while some are anxious because they are embarrassed about their teeth. Some simply do not like to feel as though they are not in control of the situation, causing them to avoid their dental appointments. No matter the underlying cause of your discomfort, you can stop fearing the dentist with sedation dentistry.
Relax with Oral Conscious Sedation
Now, oral conscious sedation is commonly used to help relieve anxieties and fears during dental appointments. This involves taking a prescribed medication prior to the appointment. There are many different types available, such as Valium, Ativan, and Halcion. Your dentist will determine which medication is right for you.
You take the medication at home prior to your appointment, so you will need someone to drive you to the dental office. As it begins to take effect, the receptors in the brain that are responsible for fear will be blocked. This allows you to fall into a deep relaxation where you feel completely at ease.
Despite what many believe, you will not become unconscious during the appointment. However, you will reach a deep level of relaxation, so you may doze off into a peaceful sleep. You will then not feel any pain, discomfort, or fear as you sit back and relax, allowing your dentist to perform the necessary treatments quickly.
After your appointment, it will take a few hours for the sedation to wear off. Therefore, you will need someone to drive you home and help you for a few hours until the effects dissipate.
