little girl at the dentist’sIt’s November, and we love this time of year — the leaves are falling and the air is starting to feel crisp here in our part of the state. Your dentist in Midland, Dr. Robert E. Christensen, also knows that November is a great time to check in and make sure your child’s smile is healthy going into the holiday season, when sweet treats and snacks abound. Keep reading for our top 3 fall smile tips to keep them grinning from ear to ear!

#1: Come In For a Checkup and Cleaning

Fall is a perfect time to schedule a checkup and cleaning. We just celebrated Halloween, and your little one’s smile may have been inundated with sugary candy. Let us take a look at your favorite little smile to make sure there aren’t any weak spots on the tooth enamel. Early detection will allow Dr. Christensen to remineralize the tooth and maybe prevent a cavity from forming at all. If a cavity has formed, a tooth-colored filling can restore it without marring your child’s smile.

#2: Pick the Right Snacks

Kids look forward to snack time all day long. While you’re at the grocery store stocking up for after school treats this fall, make sure you’re choosing nutritious, low-sugar foods and beverages. Watch out for items that seem smart but may hide big sugar contents, like fruit juice, certain cereals, and yogurt. In general, we like to recommend real fruit, whole grains, low-fat dairy (like string cheese), nuts, and sparkling or still water. Kids also love creative snacks like ants on a log, the celery/peanut butter/raisin combo!

#3: Make Brushing and Flossing Fun

Your child isn’t alone if they put up a little (or a lot of) resistance when it’s time to brush and floss. It’s not the most exciting part of anyone’s day, and kids may try to do anything to get out of cleaning their smiles. Proper brushing and flossing couldn’t be more important, though! To spice up their oral hygiene routine, try making it fun by bringing the whole family in on it. Brush and floss together at night. Or you can pick up a toothbrush/paste in their favorite movie and television characters. Starting a progress chart where they can earn small rewards for good brushing and flossing behavior may help, too. Whatever gets your child cleaning well and often, stick with it! They just may thank you for it later.
