A New Study on Women with Osteoporosis & Dental Implants

December 28, 2017

portrait of a middle aged coupleThere’s a new study out in The Journal of Implantology this year that offers some encouraging news for women who have osteoporosis and are missing or on the brink of losing teeth. Dental implants, which are already well-known for their benefits to oral and overall health, may help preserve bone density for women with this bone disease who are also taking the class of medications called bisphosphonates. Keep reading to find out more about the study — and what it could mean for your oral health.

Dental Implants and Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a bone disease that causes the bones to gradually break down over time. It is most common in postmenopausal women, though men can develop the disease as well.

One of the most common treatments for osteoporosis is a bisphosphonate, which can break down already weak bones (including the jaw). For women with missing teeth, that can mean further tooth loss and the rapid degeneration of the oral structure.

Dental implants are made of titanium, a material that actually promotes the growth of bone tissue. Knowing this, researchers set out to find whether they would promote bone growth in patients with osteoporosis taking bisphosphonates as well.

Following 24 postmenopausal women who were missing teeth — 12 had osteoporosis and were taking a bisphosphonate and 12 were not — dental implants were placed and then studied a year later. The results were a success among both groups of women. All the dental implants were sturdy and bone growth was observed, even in the women taking bisphosphonates.

What this Study Means for You

If you are a postmenopausal woman with missing or failing teeth and osteoporosis taking a bisphosphonate to treat the bone disease, dental implants look to be a promising option for your tooth replacement. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with Dr. Christensen’s office to discuss your eligibility for dental implants.

About Dental Implants

Dental implants offer patients a comprehensive tooth replacement which takes the place of the tooth’s root as well as its visible crown. They can support a single crown in the event you have only lost one tooth, a bridge for multiple missing teeth, or a full denture in the upper or lower jaw. Dental implants are associated with a number of benefits, including:

  • Promote better oral and overall health
  • Can last for many years with proper care
  • Look and feel natural
  • Stabilize the jawbone to prevent further tooth loss
  • Eliminate the need for denture creams or adhesives
  • And others

Now that you know about the significant benefits of dental implants and the possibilities for women with osteoporosis, we invite you to find out if YOU are a candidate today. We look forward to getting started right away if so!
